Oath of God’s Perspective – Animal Welfare
before reading this article as the problem must first be understood.

How can the Christian take steps to prevent cruelty to animals?  The first step is to acknowledge the problem.  The second step is to self-judge to determine if you are a direct or indirect contributor to the problem.  Many believers are indirectly involved in animal cruelty without realizing it.  The third step is to ask God which animal welfare organization is best suited for His objectives in helping you to stop animal abuse and cruelty.  A reputable organization will assist in educating you on the widespread incidences of animal abuse as well as the solutions in preventing animal cruelty.  The fourth step is to ask God in prayer to provide you with His directive steps and to give you an obedient heart to follow His instructions in preventing cruelty to animals.

The Human Society of The United State’s
interview with
Eric Metaxas

Eric was born in 1963.  He is an American Christian author, speaker, and TV host.  He is best known for two biographies.  The first was Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery.  This book was about William Wilberforce and became the companion book to the 2006 film. (1)  Metaxas also wrote Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy about Dietrich Bonhoeffer which won the 2010 Evangelical Christian Publisher’s Association Christian Book of the Year. (2)   Bonhoeffer is a New York Times best seller, climbing to #1 in the e-book category. (3)  It also won the 2011 John C. Pollock Award for Christian Biography awarded by Beeson Divinity School and a 2011 Christoper Award. (4)&(5)  He has also written humor, children’s books, and scripts for VeggieTales.  Metaxas is the founder and host of the NYC-based event series, “Socrates in the City: Conversations on the Examined Life” and the co-host of the nationally syndicated weekly Sunday morning program, 100 Huntley Street. (6)

Oath of God Ministries endorses The Humane Society of the United States and its Massachusetts State Chapter as well.  Oath of God Ministries also supports the ASPCA and its state chapter the MSPCA.  We also participate in the MSPCA’s annual Lobby Day at Boston State House.  Oath of God Ministries believes that both organizations have a stellar record of exposing cruelty to animals while working diligently to legislate laws which protect a wide range of animals from abuse.

The HSUS’s current major campaigns target five issues: factory farming, animal fighting, the fur trade, puppy mills, and wildlife abuse. (7)  The organization works on a full range of animal issues, including companion animals, wildlife, farm animals, horses and other equines, and animals used in research, testing and education. (8)

The ASPCA works primarily with companion animal issues, such as pet care, equine or horse cruelty issues, and animal cruelty and neglect. Its programs and services include: a national poison control hotline for pet owners and animal health professionals; a shelter outreach program to promote best practices within locally owned shelters, a corporate partner program to promote animal-friendly products and services, and a special anti-cruelty initiative to teach animal welfare education and animal welfare law enforcement practices (known as “humane law enforcement” within the organization) across the United States. (8b) In the state of New York, the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement division has powers to investigate cruelty and enforce laws. (8c)

The Humane Society of the United States & Evangelicals

The Humane Society of the United States has also taken the time to reach out to people of different faiths including Evangelical Christians to build a partnership with them in preventing cruelty to animals on a worldwide basis. The Humane Society of the United States understands the value that the Christian faith brings to animal welfare.  We are listing two dedicated Evangelical Christian leaders who represent the evangelical faith on HSUS’s Advisory Faith Councils and we will get to them in just a moment.

Oath of God Ministries realizes that there are different religious groups within HSUS’s Advisory Faith Council members but we need to remember that cruelty to animals is a universal problem.  We appreciate that the HSUS is reaching out to Evangelicals in a very strong way.  Preventing animal abuse using legitimate methods which align with biblical scripture and Christian precepts is an action that should resonate in the hearts and minds of every believer.  In fact, the Southern Baptist Convention and Humane Society of the United States were among supporters of legislation cracking down on animal fighting in Tennessee signed into law June 11.  On the Humane Society’s website you can find the Southern Baptist Convention’s Official and Contemporary Religious Statements on Animals.

Barrett Duke, Ph.D, is the Vice President for Public Policy and Research and Director of the Research Institute of The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), for the Southern Baptist Convention’s Washington D.C. agency on “applied Christianity” (social and moral concerns). (9)  Duke wrote an article titled 10 biblical truths about animals arguing that animals “have the capacity to enjoy life” and may have a more acute awareness of spiritual reality than we realize.”  He further explains, The attitude by some that the idea that humans and animals are equal in value makes evangelicals nervous.  But there’s a diminishing attitude that humans are free to do as they please with animals.” (10)

You will also find the Assemblies of God’s Official Religious Statements and Contemporary References Regarding Animals on the Humane Society’s website.

You may also note that the three animals mentioned in our segment “Healing Testimonies” all received miraculous healings.  It is reasonable to say that how most believers view God’s creation and how God views His creation are probably leagues apart from one another.

Isn’t it wonderful that the Humane Society of the United States is reaching out to people of faith.  We think so!

“Religious leaders have led the way in confronting cruelty to animals,
and they’ve always had a prominent place in our organization,”

HSUS president and CEO Wayne Pacelle.
