Czajkowski comes to Barnstable from the Agawam public schools, where she spent 14 years, first as head of curriculum and instruction, then four years as assistant superintendent and the last nine as superintendent. The Agawam school community characterized her to the Barnstable School Committee as “smart, detail-oriented without micromanaging, highly professional and possessing a great sense of humor.” She asked students to call her “Dr. Mary” and carried a Wonder Woman lunch box.
She began her career as a science and mathematics teacher with the East Longmeadow Public Schools where she taught for 16 years and was an interscholastic coach for girls’ field hockey, basketball and softball.
Through an interesting twist of fate, Czajkowski, 54, said she was hired for her first teaching job by Peter Cannone, a longtime former Sandwich Superintendent of Schools who conducts searches for top administrators through the Cape Cod Collaborative. Cannone was the one who encouraged her to apply for the Barnstable position, and she submitted her application just before the deadline.
“I wasn’t actively looking,” Czajkowski said. “I’ve come full circle.” The Barnstable School Committee offered her the position with a three-year contract in March at a starting salary of $180,000 that will increase to $190,000 in the third year.
She said she took the job because “I’m somebody who really loves a challenge. I saw it as a challenge and an opportunity.” Czajkowski also praised Grenier for laying a solid foundation and tackling some major issues.
“It’s a very stable district. I sort of want to take it to the next level,” she said referring to her 90-day plan. The plan ranges from general goals of understanding the culture, values and beliefs of the schools to specific objectives focusing on developing relationships with the various constituencies she will deal with: school committee, school and town administration, teaching and support staff, teachers and other employee associations, students, parents and community members, town and staff officials and community organizations.
Czajkowski said her 90-day plan will give her an opportunity to know the community and the school district. “I like to be visible,” she said. One of her first outreach efforts will be to make “house calls to parents,” which she calls neighborhood meetings to discuss issues and ways to work together. She said she likes to “sit back and assess.”
