The Problem.

Premarital sex and abortion do remain a serious problem for both the viable church in America as well as the general population.  The legislative piece “Laura’s Law” aka A Women’s Right to Know” was initially sponsored by Rep. Elizabeth Poirier of Attleboro, MA and promoted by Eileen Smith whose 22 year old born-again and pro-life Christian daughter died on an abortion table in Hyannis, Massachusetts on September 13, 2007.  The Hyannis abortion clinic has since closed its doors.

Regretfully, most Christians remain unaware of Laura’s Law because the Body of Christ has to a great extent abandoned the civic arena and without God’s permission.  This includes church leaders.  Very few believers have ever gone before a Hearing Committee at their local State House to either speak-up against an unrighteous bill whose very nature is to slaughter the unborn or to defend a life-giving bill such as Laura’s Law.  Every citizen should view the opportunity to speak before a state legislative committee as a privilege, not a task.  A 501C3 doesn’t prevent a pastor from speaking up against an evil bill.  A few pastors and Catholic priests do appear before these Committees and we are grateful for their efforts.

It is inexcusable not to defend the unborn and Christians should repent.  Scripture states that the Body of Christ is to defend the unborn because the unborn cannot defend themselves. “Open your mouth for the speechless,  In the cause of all who are appointed to die.” (Pro 31:8)  In addition to this problem, many Christians cast unrighteous ballots and in doing so place unrighteous men and women into office who legislate abortion.  It’s that simple.  We are living in the Laodicean church age and there will be consequences at the Bema Seat for every believer who has squandered the opportunity to act on behalf of the unborn.

Churches should come together to build homes for unwed mothers, Christians should pray outside abortion clinics and clusters of churches should have accessible healing ministries for post-abortive men and women who suffer daily with regrets that they aborted their child.  Please consider giving one of these sacrificial offerings to God anyone of which He will honor.

On a separate issue, Mrs. Smith believes that the pastors need to speak up more. “We have failed to get the message out to believers,” Eileen said. “The church needs to become more involved in educating its members about abortion.  We need to be very upfront, very vocal and very graphic.”  She adds, “I believe God has opened my eyes.  I have always been pro-life, but I kept it in my heart.”  Eileen continues, “As horrific as it sounds, I want to get an abortion shown on TV.  Adults don’t know what happens during an abortion, and this would be the best way to show them.”(1)

Oath of God Ministries agrees with Mrs. Smith that every Christian believer, despite the denomination, should view an abortion video.  It is time to remove the rose rimmed glasses and the white gloves from our complacent lives.  In fact, on an annual basis, every church should sponsor an evening where abortion is discussed and questions are answered.  All attendees should view a video on abortion.  Speakers should be invited to help the church community better understand how an abortion decision affects men and women years later.

Regrettably there are too many Christian parents who will never know that they are missing grandchildren.  Laura was an evangelical Christian who attended church on Cape Cod yet she opted for abortion.   According to her family, Laura was very prolife.  An Operation Rescue member was quoted, It’s particularly sad to me that Laura resorted to abortion despite being a Christian active in her local church.  Her mother also reported that Laura was strongly opposed to abortion.  Which goes to show that anybody can panic, and our churches need to be teaching young women how to get past the panic that too often leads to the abortion table.”(2)

Mrs. Smith added, I know that God is going to bring good out of my daughter’s death.  What a horrible thing; for my daughter to be associated with abortion.  But, if God’s going to use it for good and for His glory, then so be it.  We’re going very public with a very shameful, private thing because I believe God wants to use it to save lives.  I believe the truth will come out, and the light of God will shine on this.

Laura’s death has had tremendous impact around the country, and even into Canada, without the local news mentioning it.  It just came out in the secular media this week – 5 weeks after Laura’s death.  I now believe it is my calling to keep telling Laura’s story to the Church, and the world.  I naively believed that abortion was not a choice for a Christian girl.

A Pastor had even apologized to me and the Lord, for not speaking about this from his pulpit.  We both had false assumptions.  This is a problem in the Church, and one that needs to be spoken about from the pulpits.  We have to take the “A” word out of the closet, put it out in the open, and discuss it.  And maybe, possibly, hopefully, we’ll even become active against it.  Please keep our family in your prayers, and please tell someone Laura’s story.”(3)

Concerns about the Pulpit:

Pastors who have worked with me in different ministries over the past 15 years, have told me that they will never discuss abortion at the pulpit.  They’ve said, “It’s too political.  It’s too sensitive an issue.  I don’t want to offend anyone.  I have a woman sitting in the pews who had an abortion and I don’t want to upset her.”  Over the many years, I’ve heard a myriad of pathetic excuses to justify this type of silence and most of these attempts are non-biblical and simply reckless .  Abortion is not political.  It is the murder of a defenseless unborn baby of which the entire Body of Christ is biblically called by God to publicly defend.  If left unchecked, the steady stream of innocent blood brings God’s judgment on a nation.

Clearly if a woman is struggling with aberrant post abortion behavior (described below) then the pastor has a god given responsibility to refer her to a healing ministry or Christian counseling.  This caring action will freely allow a pastor to speak as he hears from God regarding this subject thereby stopping the potential half dozen men or women still sitting in the pews from choosing abortion by next week.  Once healed, post-abortive women and men have become some of the strongest voices for pro-life action.

I have met too many post-abortive men and women who remain, even decades later, angry at pastors for not speaking-up about abortion or premarital sex.  Although this may seem very unfair towards any pastor, many post-abortive women believe that the pulpit’s silence helped them to blindly engage in a lethal decision which ultimately has plagued them on a daily basis.

The aborted baby dies once but the post-abortive women and men die daily in their guilt, shame, and self-condemnation until the door to Christ’s healing opens to them.  Many nationwide pro-life organizations complain that they never receive any support from their local churches.  Many also report that pastors are not vocal enough on abortion.  Clearly, there is a pattern here which requires change.

Post-Abortive Behavior

Overall statistics show that teenagers who have aborted are at a much higher risk of both committing suicide and later entering mental health facilities.  Months after an abortion, many adult women will begin to question their decision.  The symptoms of post-abortion stress behavior may vary among different woman but inevitably whatever has been repressed will eventually be expressed by way of aberrant behaviors.

Some women may spiral into alcoholism, drug abuse, bulimia, anorexia, divorce, workaholicism, or any combination of these behaviors.  Women who develop families later on may overcompensate for past failures by becoming super moms towards their otherwise normal children.  In turn they exhaust themselves while simultaneously nurturing unhealthy responses towards their living children.  Intimacy may prove difficult.

Forgiveness towards others who wrongfully counseled, coerced or abandoned them seems impossible to embrace.  Divorce is frequent.  Many women may suffer panic attacks, show anxiety when hearing a baby cry, or remain unable to hold a baby in their arms.  Many women will experience chronic and reoccurring nightmares.  Some have nervous breakdowns.  The spirit of condemnation taunts their inner most thoughts.   For many women the suffering is immeasurable and may lead to death by suicide.

In 2012 the Alan Guttmacher Institute stated that 45% of all abortions are repeat abortions.  Different studies have shown a background pattern of violence and sexual abuse in women having multiple induced abortions with a higher rate of mortality and health risks to follow later in life.  Compounded by guilt and the emotional need to replace an earlier aborted baby, the mother finds herself in the same vicious cycle of aborting her next unborn baby.  Low self-esteem, drug or alcohol abuse, relationship conflicts as well as post-abortive sexual activity are all contributing factors to having another unexpected pregnancy and subsequent abortion.

Loss of Fatherhood:

Men are also affected by the aftermath of abortion.  A man may isolate himself with self-inflicted grief, depression or suicidal thoughts.  These thoughts may lead to alcohol or substance abuse to dull the pain.  Repressed or misguided anger is frequently a problem in men.

Some men may develop distrust for women.  Myriad disorders and behaviors may be acted out by men unaware that they are responding to the loss of fatherhood.  Out of fear of impregnating any woman again, some men may migrate towards pornography as well as homosexuality.

Silence grieves the Holy Spirit.

This video is for pastors. It was created by Allan Parker, President; The Justice Foundation-Operation Outcry.  The outcry is from Christian women who had abortions.  So many of these women are sitting in pews every Sunday and they need healing.
