Although God may reveal to science a glimpse into His profound creation of life in the womb – biblical scripture makes it perfectly clear that this ineffable process of life will never be completely understood by either science or mankind. “As you do not know what is the way of the wind, Or how the bones grow in the womb, Of her who is with child, So you do not know the works of  God who makes everything.”  (Ecc 11:5)  Therefore, we must always approach the sanctity of life in the womb with the utmost dignity and respect towards the unborn person.

God also told the prophet Jeremiah “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” (Jer 1:5)  In other words, not only did God know Jeremiah before he was formed in his mother’s womb – God clearly had a specific purpose for Jeremiah’s life before his mother conceived.  Even Jeremiah’s mother had no idea what God had in mind for her new born baby.  In fact, God has a good plan for every person on earth today but His foreordained plans for our lives are now orchestrated through His plan of salvation in Christ Jesus.  Without a relationship with Christ Jesus who is the world’s Savior and Redeemer, individual people will miss the purposeful plans that God has always had in store for them here on earth.  Please see our article “Why You Need Jesus”.

Medline Plus a service provided by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institute of Health, an agency of the U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services which is primarily responsible for biomedical and health-related research confirms, “During intercourse, sperm enter the vagina after the man ejaculates. The strongest sperm will travel through the cervix (the opening of the womb, or uterus), and into the Fallopian tubes. A single sperm and the mother’s egg cell meet in the Fallopian tube. When the single sperm enters the egg, conception occurs. The combined sperm and egg is called a zygote.”  Medline Plus further states that “The zygote contains all of the genetic information (DNA) needed to become a baby. Half the DNA comes from the mother’s egg and half from the father’s sperm.”  Clearly, God’s DNA blueprint for the unborn baby is in place at the moment of conception.  The baby’s sex or gender has also been determined at this time as well.  “A baby’s sex is determined at the time of conception.  When the baby is conceived, a chromosome from the sperm cell, either X or Y, fuses with the X chromosome in the egg cell, determining whether the baby will be female or male. Two X’s means the baby will be a girl, and XY means it will be a boy” is also confirmed by Penn Medicine, Sexual Differentiation.

National Geographic’s renowned series “In the Womb – Video 2” describes conception in the following way, “Once within the egg wall, the sperm’s nucleus is drawn toward the egg’s.  The two cells gradually and gracefull become one. This is the moment of conception where an individual’s unique set of DNA is created – a human signature that never existed before and will never be repeated again in human history.”  It is at this moment when the egg and sperm become one in the womb to create the zygote which contains God’s DNA blueprint for both a new and separate human life.  The unborn baby in the womb is a separate human being from his mother.  Although the mother carries the baby to term, it is the placenta that provides oxygen and nutrients to the growing baby.  The placenta also removes waste particles from the baby’s blood.  The baby has a unique and separate DNA code from the mother, manufacturers his own blood, beats his own heart and continues to develop his own organs.  At the moment of conception the unborn baby is a separate individual from the mother.  Yes, this precious human being is dependent on the mother for the next nine months in the womb but children will continue to be dependent on their parents until they reach adulthood. This dependency does not give the mother the right to destroy her newborn baby.

Thus far these different scientific organizations and agencies have properly described the moment of conception as well as the various events leading up to conception.  Our Creator has lovingly condescended to allow science a glimpse into His profound design of life in the womb and so far scientists are able to agree with one another on all of the above.

But when does life begin in the womb is our next question?  Medline Plus states that “when the single sperm enters the egg, conception occurs”.  So does life begin with conception?  To address this very specific and critical question we will now turn to other leading experts in the medical field.

On April 23-24, 1981 a Senate Judiciary Subcommittee conducted hearings on this very question.  When does life begin?  One of the preeminent speakers was Dr. Hymie Gordon, Chairman – Department of Genetics at the Mayo Clinic, who stated, “By all the criteria of modern molecular biology, life is present from the moment of conception.”  Another prominent speaker C. Christopher Hook, M.D. Oncologist, Mayo Clinic, Director of Ethics Education, Mayo Graduate School of Medicine stated, “When fertilization is complete, a unique genetic human entity exists.”  Many other renowned geneticists and biologists spoke at the hearing and all agreed that human life begins at the moment of conception.  As National Geographic stated, “an individual’s unique set of DNA is created – a human signature that never existed before and will never be repeated.”

To divert for a brief moment, the concept of oneness should also be properly highlighted in this article.  According to Apostle Paul, the oneness between a husband and wife symbolizes the mystery between Christ Jesus and His bride, the Church.  Apostle Paul repeats what Jesus said in Mark 10:7-8 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.  This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” (Eph 5:31-32)  In spiritual terms, the church is the bride of Christ which in turn makes Him the bridegroom and head of the church.  We as individual believers are members of Christ’s body and must submit to his headship in “oneness”.  “That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us,” (Jhn 17:21)  By way of our unique identity in Christ Jesus through Salvation where we receive the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit, we can genuinely declare our “oneness” with the Holy Trinity.  So we can see the “oneness” of the sperm and egg, the “oneness” of flesh between a husband and wife and our oneness with the Trinity.

As discussed earlier, the term “conception” is understood to mean the union of the sperm and ovum (female egg).  The combined sperm and egg is called a zygote.  Some medical professionals as well as prominent church leaders will use the term “fertilization” instead of “conception” to define this same event.  Therefore these two terms when used correctly are interchangeable.  However, some but not all medical organizations as well as Planned Parenthood have crossed the line to promote a different timetable and definition for conception.  Planned Parenthood does not alter the definition of “fertilization” but they do change the term “conception” while giving it a different timetable as well.  As the fertilized egg begins to travel through the fallopian tube heading towards the safety of the uterus, it will experience rapid cell division and will soon attach to the lining of the uterus.  When this attachment takes place – implantation occurs.  Planned Parenthood promotes the implantation event as the beginning of the woman’s pregnancy.  This ideology is completely wrong.

Planned Parenthood has conveniently adopted the definition of pregnancy from the (AGOG) The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as the following: “According to general medical definitions of pregnancy that have been endorsed by many organizations including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the United States Department of Health and Human Services, pregnancy begins when a pre-embryo completes implantation into the lining of the uterus”(1)  The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynocologists was formerly known as The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.  This organization is politically active in supporting various legislative priorities which include  1) Access to reproductive health services; and 2) Promoting access to contraception, including emergency contraception.(2)  The ACOG has an invested interest in promoting these platforms because many of its professional members currently provide women with abortion and contraception in their independent practices.  What percentage of AGOG’s membership provide abortions on a weekly basis cannot be determined at this time.  It’s important to note that “gaining access to reproductive health services” actually means access to abortion.

Another legislative priority of AGOG is to 3) Advocate the use of medically accurate information.(3)  If ACOG can legalize its definition of pregnancy then it will become law and near impossible to eradicate.  Millions upon millions more women will be involved in killing their own unborn babies.  What AGOG has done here is to conveniently redefine the meaning of both abortion and pregnancy.  In turn, Planned Parenthood has conveniently adopted the term “pre-embryo” instead of “embryo” from AGOG.  The term “pregnancy” is used for the moment of implantation thereby removing any consideration for the correct usage of the terms fertilization or conception.  This allows Planned Parenthood to promote various abortion techniques such as the “morning after pill” also known as “emergency contraception” which is a very powerful dose of an oral contraceptive.  These new terms and definitions give women the false impression that they are not destroying the life of their unborn baby.  If fertilization has already occurred, the “emergency contraception” will destroy the implantation of a newly conceived human being.  This is considered abortion in God’s eyes.  Planned Parenthood promotes both contraception and abortion because this is how it makes money.

The researcher who is involved with embryonic stem cell research also destroys human life but he does this in the name of Science.  The researcher also makes his money this way.  This is his livelihood.  Please see the section “Stem Cell Research” to better understand the process as well as the ethical dilemma this research presents.
